Join me into the Magic of Coloring and you will experience this beautiful feeling of inner peace with a truly colorful mind.
Since i can remember myself i love doing all kinds of creative activities, especially drawing which i basically do all the time. Being creative opens doors to imaginary worlds and other dimensions.
Coloring though was never my thing, I found it rather boring. It is not that i didn’t like to color, i just didn’t like the motives of the coloring pages that were available to me that time. Many years later (around 2010) i started to draw mandalas which led to a collection of black and white artworks, excellent templates for coloring pages. So i started to color my mandalas which opend a new door of fascination. It is as if every mandala gets a second life, another way or form to express itself. It is like creating a new artwork each time or rather a new version of an already existing artwork and i am not getting tired to color one mandala over and over again. After the rather long and intense period of focus that is needed during the drawing of the mandala, coloring is the most fun part of my mandala work.
Since then i love coloring and it became a very important part of my artistic life.
One of my favorites is to start the day (mostly after but can once in a while also be before my yoga) with coffee and colors. I love to color my mandalas any time a day, but to start with it in the morning indicates a special day in a way. That might be a Sunday or a day when i take a conscious break of the usual routine. I love to color after times of study or periods that involved a lot a mind activity and over-stimulation. When the mind becomes a constant chatter box, coloring helps to calm down and quiet the mind. I love to do some coloring when i want to be creative (what is mostly all the time) but don’t necessarily have an idea or the drive to create something new. I can be creative without the need of a specific outcome.
Coloring is a great way to relax the mind and the body. While coloring i can let go of all thoughts and worries and be totally in the moment. This has the effect of becoming very calm and entering a meditative state. That’s why i like to call the creative activity of coloring an active meditation. Like any other activity that lets us immerge in it and forget time, coloring helps us being totally in the here and now.
Coloring makes me not only feel more relaxed and calm, but as well balanced and centered. My mind is getting quiet, the left side of the brain is (finally) “shutting up’ and the right side, the creative part takes over.
Coloring gives me inner peace and what fascinates me the most of all, it is getting me in touch with the healing effect of the colors. When i indulge myself in the magic of coloring i can feel the energy of each color and i can absorb their vibrations and healing properties.
“Life is not only black and white
but FULL of COLORS.”
Coloring is a wonderful activity that opens the heART and brings not only joy, but empowerment. Colorong makes me feel truly re-energized and ready for anything…
“Drawing or Coloring Mandalas serves the creative purpose
of giving expression and form to something new and unique.
The process is that of the ascending spiral,
which grows upward while simultaneously returning
again and again to the same point…”
Marie-Louise von Franz
Some years ago i came across a great article by Martina Trejo that describes and explains the amazing benefits of coloring. She mentioned that coloring is not only a great entertainment for kids, but became a real trend for adults which are looking for a distarction from the pressure of their daily lives. And these are the top
1. Your brain experiences relief by entering a meditative state.
2. Focusing on the present helps you achieve mindfulness.
3. Stress and anxiety levels have the potential to be lowered.
4. Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity.
5. Unplugging from technology promotes creation over consumption.
6. Coloring can be done by anyone, not just artists or creative types.
7. It’s a hobby that can be taken with you wherever you go.
I totally agree that coloring is a kind of meditation, i actually like to call it active meditation. Meditation calms the mind and the brain enters in a relaxed state. Coloring mandalas has a very similar effect. Even though i am doing something, i am entering into a meditative state in the same time. Indulging in an activity that lets one forget time and space, puts the focus on the present and one can be totally in the moment, in the here and now.The often non-stop chattering mind of us “grown-ups” is switched off for some time and unwanted thoughts can be blocked out. As a result one can get a break from the daily routine and become relieved from stress and worries. This creates feelings of inner peace and happiness.
Coloring can not really be called a therapy because there is no interaction between a qualified art therapist and the patient, but professionals agree that coloring can definitely have a therapeutic effect and benefit.
Studies are providing support that coloring mandalas or geometric patterns actually does help lower stress and anxiety levels. It was revealed that changes of heart rates and brainwaves occurred in participants of a relevant study. It is said that there are three key elements — repetition, pattern, and detail — that prompt positive neurological responses. It appears to be calming for the mind when it is able to predict that things will happen in a certain way. When thoughts are focused on a simple activity, the brain tends to relax.
Coloring requires attention focused outside of self-awareness. It removes the focal point from the thoughts and moves the mind from the inner to the outer world and into the present moment. It is an activity that is often experienced as calming and comforting. Like cutting the lawn, sewing, knitting or going on a drive, coloring takes the focus away from ourselves and can therefore be described as relaxing.
It is no secret that mindfulness is the key to reducing stress levels. When the mind is committed to the present it stops worrying about decisions done in the past and halts thinking of anything far ahead in the future.
Dr. Joel Pearson, a brain scientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia said: “Concentrating on coloring an image may facilitate the replacement of negative thoughts and images with pleasant ones.”
We live in a world in which technology is so deeply immersed in our daily lives, that a life without it seems to become impossible. Technology has taken such an important part and is integrated in our lives in such a way that people are becoming dependent and cannot function or even be without it anymore.
Technology has created an omnipotent relation to mobile connectivity that the use of a mobile “phone” becomes more and more difficult to avoid. People are constantly checking their phones and even having them close by while sleeping. This indicates a certain addiction when use turns into abuse.
Especially in our modern times it is from utter important to calm our mind and senses by disconnecting from technology. It looks like there is an emerging need to invest in hobbies that unplug us from the virtual world. Coloring does just that. Technology is left behind and one can take a break, unwind for some time and focus on what is in front. Coloring takes us back into the physical reality and in the here and now.
You do not need to be an artist to enjoy coloring. There is no skill levels which you have to acquire before starting a coloring page and there’s no right or wrong when choosing your favorite colors. You can create your own color version of any chosen artwork and create a cooperation work with the original artist. The completion of such an artwork provides you with a sense of accomplishment. You receive an instant gratification which elicits more happy and satisfying feelings.
Last but not least, there’s another plus of choosing coloring as a beneficial time-pass: It is possible to do nearly anywhere and anytime. Some paper and colors are easily fitting in a bag to be taken wherever you go. Often we have to spend time waiting somewhere, at the train station or the airport, the doctor or elsewhere and we might try ceasing our boredom with our cell phones. Instead we could bring a coloring book and color pencils and sprinkle our waiting time with colors. We can take coloring pages and colors with us when going to a park or to the coffee shop. Wherever we are, coloring can give us a different and more calming experience, may bring up some childhood nostalgia and promotes some good old fashioned fun.
Coloring brings not only colors into our lives. It is a lovely activity that brings relaxation and inner peace. It rewires the brain, calms and clears the mind. It opens the heART and let in colorful thoughts. It is a cheap but valuable hobby, a simple activity with plenty of benefits.
Fall in love with coloring and you will be blessed with bliss and subtle healing energies.
