Into the 4 Directions

Re-Orientation – Change of (point of) view, focus and mind-set – Breaking of Routine

Every once in a while we reach a crossroad.

Which direction to chose and which way to walk depends entirely on our own individual and younique soul journey.

What are the options and possibilities?
Are there any opportunities showing up or doors opening?
What could be the next step?
Which direction (to start with)?
Look out for signs and listen to your heart.

Reaching a crossroad in life indicates a time when decisions need to be taken. These decisions can be important marking stones on our way and can have a crucial effect on our future. These kind of decisions need to be made with a clear mind, in a calm relaxed state. When we are stressed or under pressure we usualy make wrong decisions.
Best advice for these decision-making-times is to follow your intuition. Don’t make decision alone from an intellectual level. Don’t think too much, don’t overthink it. Feel it.
Calm down and center yourself before taking any decision. Ask yourself if it feels right and if the decision you are about to take is aligned with your mind and your heart and not compelled by fear or social pressure or commitment. Always act from your center and out from your heart.

Take your time to make the right decisions.

Make decisions not only with your mind but involve your feelings. If you are looking for answers you have to start asking questions. Listen to your heart, it knows it all. The heart has all the answers. Follow it, it knows the way – or in the favorite words of Joseph Campell: “Follow your bliss.”

“The way to find out about your happiness is to keep your mind on those moments when you feel most happy, when you really are happy – not excited, not thrilled, but deeply happy. This requires a little bit of self-analysis. What is it that makes you happy? Stay with it, no matter what people tell you. This is what I call “following your bliss.”
Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

Reaching a crossroad in life usually brings a re-orientation phase. Suddenly there is a choice. When the road splits, more possibilites and options become available and one might chose to the change the direction. Crossroads are points of transformation.
If you feel the urge to learn more and to expand, you have to grow. If you want to change your life you have to step out of your comfort zone. You have to make a first step in order to be able to discover the world around you and fully experience life.
You have to take down the walls you might have built up around yourself, most likely for protective reasons and purposes. These walls are now limiting and restricting, they hold you back from growth and expansion. It is time now to tear down the walls and chose your way.

Center yourself in the heart and activate the energy flow in all directions.

Before looking to the outside world and out into all directions, it is always a good advice to enter your center.
The vertical direction of the human body is a symbol for the connecting forces between the heaven and the earth. These energies moving up and down our spine are holding the human being together like the tree that has its roots anchored in the earth while its branches grow high up into the sky.
Feel the energy connection that leads downwards and straight into the heart of Mother Earth from where we are coming and to which our bodies are returning. Feel love and gratitude for the mother that nourrishes and supports us physically.
Connect with the energy flow that leads upwards, towards and into the Eye of Father Sky, let the energy of your spirit flow freely and lighten up your state of mind.

Focus on your heart center and shower blessings down to Mother Earth and high up to Father Sky. Then radiate in all four directions and send blessing. Appreciate each direction for its unique force and purpose.

Calling upon the four directions

is a great way to open a sacred space in which the veils between the physical and spiritual worlds can begin to thin and transformation is put into motion.

The four directions, the four elements, as well as the four seasons, all are representations of the different stages we pass through in life, moving from one stage into another. Life moves in circles, from the beginning till the end, from birth to death, over and over again.
Each direction is associated with an element of the natural world and carries a different energy. The directions should not be seen as separate and isolated, but rather as part of the interdependent system that makes up the world.

When the Lakota people pray or do anything sacred, they see the world as having four directions. Each direction has a special meaning and color associated with it. The cross symbolizes all directions.

When the Lakota pray with the Sacred Pipe, they add two other directions: Sky, Earth and the Sacred Place Within. The Sacred Place Within, it is that which comes within the souls of men when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its Powers.
Wakan tanka – the Great Spirit – dwells high above like an eagle in the sky; this direction’s color is blue. Earth is our Mother and Grandmother from whom we receive our nourishment. The color of this direction is green for all growing things.

If you are not sure where to go and if you are looking for directions and guidance, meditating upon the four directions can bring you understanding and clarity.
